Description

It is certainly not easy to confront the slain bodies resulting from Palestinian suicide attacks. (1) Interpretations of Palestinian suicide bombings have varied from a sympathetic construction of Palestinian desperation to a concession that Israel must secure its survival by smashing the social milieu from which the suicide bombers arise. (2) This article proposes a reading of the second intifada which emphasizes the colonial circumstances of Gaza and the West Bank. In this context, I suggest that the classic interpretative categories of colonial studies ought to enter the interpretative frame. Proposals in this direction have been authoritative yet isolated. (3) It is easy to overlook the colonial features of Israeli society. We are often told that Jewish history is inherently exceptional, and this may have discouraged a comparative approach. In recent years, however, some intellectuals in Israel itself have promoted an intense and sophisticated debate that begins with the idea that Israel is a settler-colonial nation-state. (4) Zeev Sternhell's work on the relationships between Zionism and the typical phenomena of proto-fascist nationalisms is an outstanding example of this recent comparative revisionism. (5)
